How to play Wreckfest split screen on PC

  1. Get Nucleus Co-op

Download Nucleus Co-op, free for Windows 10 and 11, and unzip it into its own folder, for example C:\NucleusCo-op. There is no installer.

Keep it out of Program Files, your user folder and OneDrive.

    Download Nucleus Co-op

  2. Install the Wreckfest handler

In Nucleus Co-op, search the Hub for Wreckfest and install its handler, or download the handler file from this page and drop it on the Nucleus window. Then show Nucleus where Wreckfest is installed.

    Download the handler file (.nc)

  3. Take a seat

Each player presses a button on their own controller to join and takes a spot on the screen. Pick a layout that fits your players.

  4. Launch and connect

Press Launch: Nucleus opens one copy of Wreckfest per player and lays the windows out on your screen. Then link them in game, usually one player hosts a LAN or online session and the others join it. The handler notes say how.

What you need

  • A Windows 10 or 11 PC

Nucleus Co-op runs on Windows only. System requirements

  • Wreckfest for Windows

Installed on that PC. Nucleus starts every player's window from that one install.

  • Nucleus Co-op, free

With .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later and the Visual C++ 2015–2022 runtimes (x86 and x64). Download

  • Something to play with

One controller per player; one player can use the keyboard and mouse. Controllers

  • A PC that can run 5 copies

Each player runs their own copy of Wreckfest, so the PC carries several times the usual load. Lower the graphics settings if it struggles. Performance tips

  • A multiplayer mode

Nucleus links the windows through the game's own LAN or online mode; the handler takes care of it.

About Wreckfest

Wreckfest (previously known by its working title Next Car Game and currently listed on Steam as Next Car Game: Wreckfest) is a racing video game in development by Bugbear Entertainment, creators of the well-known demolition derby-style racing series FlatOut. Wreckfest is described as the spiritual successor to the FlatOut series and a cross between FlatOut, Destruction Derby and cult 1989 PC racer Street Rod. A notable feature of the game engine is the use of soft-body damage modelling, which enables location-based damage that affects the driving dynamics of vehicles in a realistic fashion.

It works, but sadly the game is very demanding and I can barely push it to 3 players. Wish I could get better performance somehow.

Works well with nucleus as long as you have a powerful enough PC to run more than one instance, physics are really performance hungry, i'm having a pretty ok experience with 2 players on my 4k tv but 3 or 4 players just can't run well even with lowest graphics settings. For reference i got a 7700k CPU (4.5ghz clock), a 1080ti (11go vram) and a nvme ssd so if you got last gen pc that should run fine. IMPORTANT STUFF In order to make the game work correctly you have to create profiles and assign them to corresponding controllers in nucleus, then you need to launch the games in windowed mode and chose the vertical split screen with original aspect ratio or the game will look and play like crap. Also controller need to be unmapped in controller settings or they will glitch.
