How to play A Hat in Time split screen on PC

  1. Get Nucleus Co-op

    Download Nucleus Co-op, free for Windows 10 and 11, and unzip it into its own folder, for example C:\NucleusCo-op. There is no installer.

    Keep it out of Program Files, your user folder and OneDrive.

  2. Install the A Hat in Time handler

    In Nucleus Co-op, search the Hub for A Hat in Time and install its handler, or download the handler file from this page and drop it on the Nucleus window. Then show Nucleus where A Hat in Time is installed.

  3. Take a seat

    Each player presses a button on their own controller to join and takes a spot on the screen. Pick a layout that fits your players.

    Playing with several keyboards and mice? Press End once everything is in place to give each window its own cursor.

  4. Launch and connect

    Press Launch: Nucleus opens one copy of A Hat in Time per player and lays the windows out on your screen. Then link them in game, usually one player hosts a LAN or online session and the others join it. The handler notes say how.

  • A PC that can run 16 copies

    Each player runs their own copy of A Hat in Time, so the PC carries several times the usual load. Lower the graphics settings if it struggles. Performance tips

  • A multiplayer mode

    Nucleus links the windows through the game's own LAN or online mode; the handler takes care of it.

Handler notes

  • Tested and working with the latest latest legit Steam version as of 28/04/24. Try to not update if a big update comes out again as the handler could break.

  • The game has native split-screen for 2 players max but with this you can play with 4+.

  • Split-screen setup guide.

  • Use a different save slot per instance. To connect the instances enable online mode in the game and use the same lobby name in all.

  • If you select yes to use the game's native split-screen in the handler UI option you can play with 3 or 4 players in only two instances of the game for better performance, the first two gamepads will control the first instance and the other two gamepads the second, press start in-game to add a local player in each instance, if you want to have only one player per instance select No in the UI option. Lower graphic settings to improve performance.
