How to play State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition split screen on PC

  1. Get Nucleus Co-op

Download Nucleus Co-op, free for Windows 10 and 11, and unzip it into its own folder, for example C:\NucleusCo-op. There is no installer.

Keep it out of Program Files, your user folder and OneDrive.

    Download Nucleus Co-op

  2. Install the State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition handler

In Nucleus Co-op, search the Hub for State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition and install its handler, or download the handler file from this page and drop it on the Nucleus window. Then show Nucleus where State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition is installed.

    Download the handler file (.nc)

  3. Take a seat

Each player presses a button on their own controller to join and takes a spot on the screen. Pick a layout that fits your players.

  4. Launch and connect

Press Launch: Nucleus opens one copy of State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition per player and lays the windows out on your screen. Then link them in game, usually one player hosts a LAN or online session and the others join it. The handler notes say how.

What you need

  • A Windows 10 or 11 PC

Nucleus Co-op runs on Windows only. System requirements

  • State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition for Windows

Installed on that PC. Nucleus starts every player's window from that one install.

  • Nucleus Co-op, free

With .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later and the Visual C++ 2015–2022 runtimes (x86 and x64). Download

  • Something to play with

One controller per player: Xbox, PlayStation or generic pads. Controllers

  • A PC that can run 4 copies

Each player runs their own copy of State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition, so the PC carries several times the usual load. Lower the graphics settings if it struggles. Performance tips

  • A multiplayer mode

Nucleus links the windows through the game's own LAN or online mode; the handler takes care of it.

Handler notes

IMPORTANT: For this handler to work Nucleus needs to be outside any windows users folders, in the root of your drive like C:\NucleusCo-op is the recommended location. This handler launches all the instances under different temporary windows users, you need to launch Nucleus as admin, this is needed so you can log-in using different Microsoft accounts in each instance so you can connect them.

READ the handler notes in the UI very carefully. Only working with latest legit Steam version of the game.

The instances will start fullscreen at first, this is normal. Log in using different Microsoft accounts in each instance, you can alt-tab between the instances if necessary. DO NOT press the prompt to start resizing the instances until all accounts are logged in.

Make sure the Microsoft accounts are friends (you can do this via xbox.com), then in-game go to multiplayer in the settings and make sure hosting is turned on (its off by default). Once this is done, press start, and on the pause menu you'll see three empty player slots (little squares) just select one and you'll have the option to invite a friend, and should see the other account(s) available.

Enable the option "Keep Nucleus made user accounts" in the Nucleus settings and save if you want to keep your login details, save games and graphics settings after closing Nucleus.

If the handler doesn't work or you get a game crash error try moving Nucleus to the root of the drive your games are installed on. Press CTRL+T twice if an instance resizes incorrectly, or the resolution is wrong (pixelated).

As the instances connect via the Xbox Live servers an internet connection is required.

When I play split-screen multiplayer, the sound gets distorted as if the audio from both players is overlapping. Does anyone have a solution?

    • Talos91

Lower the sound effects or music in the game settings for one instance or use Nucleus settings sound tab.

Ok, I was able to change the language in nucleuscoop's own settings (gear icon > settings > steam language)...to be perfect just get a way to use keyboard/mouse and a gamepad (I prefer keyboard and my girlfriend the gamepad)...
