How to play SM64 Coop Deluxe split screen on PC

  1. Get Nucleus Co-op

Download Nucleus Co-op, free for Windows 10 and 11, and unzip it into its own folder, for example C:\NucleusCo-op. There is no installer.

Keep it out of Program Files, your user folder and OneDrive.

    Download Nucleus Co-op

  2. Install the SM64 Coop Deluxe handler

In Nucleus Co-op, search the Hub for SM64 Coop Deluxe and install its handler, or download the handler file from this page and drop it on the Nucleus window. Then show Nucleus where SM64 Coop Deluxe is installed.

    Download the handler file (.nc)

  3. Take a seat

Each player presses a button on their own controller to join and takes a spot on the screen. Pick a layout that fits your players.

  4. Launch and connect

Press Launch: Nucleus opens one copy of SM64 Coop Deluxe per player and lays the windows out on your screen. Then link them in game, usually one player hosts a LAN or online session and the others join it. The handler notes say how.

  • A PC that can run 16 copies

  • A multiplayer mode

Nucleus links the windows through the game's own LAN or online mode; the handler takes care of it.

Handler notes

  • This is for the native PC port Co-op DX version, not emulated: https://sm64coopdx.com/.

  • Get the directx version for Windows and launch the main game at least once before running the handler so the game's config files get created.

  • Split-screen setup guide.

  • Connect the instances by hosting a direct connect game in one instance and joining in the others. Change your character skin in the player options in the main menu.

  • Read the FAQ if you have any further questions and want to know more about Nucleus Co-op.

This is my favourite Nucleus co Op game. The old handler was a nightmare because the old Mario 64 didn’t have a controller assign option in the game settings. One controller would control every instance even with Hid Hud and DS4 windows running. The Deluxe version has its own setting to counter that. Thank you Talos. You always make the best handlers and I greatly appreciate your work. 💪🏻
