How to play The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition split screen on PC

  1. Get Nucleus Co-op

    Download Nucleus Co-op, free for Windows 10 and 11, and unzip it into its own folder, for example C:\NucleusCo-op. There is no installer.

    Keep it out of Program Files, your user folder and OneDrive.

  2. Install the The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition handler

    In Nucleus Co-op, search the Hub for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition and install its handler, or download the handler file from this page and drop it on the Nucleus window. Then show Nucleus where The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition is installed.

  3. Take a seat

    Each player presses a button on their own controller to join and takes a spot on the screen. Pick a layout that fits your players.

  4. Launch and connect

    Press Launch: Nucleus opens one copy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition per player and lays the windows out on your screen. Then link them in game, usually one player hosts a LAN or online session and the others join it. The handler notes say how.

    One controller per player: Xbox, PlayStation or generic pads. Controllers

  • A PC that can run 4 copies

    Each player runs their own copy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, so the PC carries several times the usual load. Lower the graphics settings if it struggles. Performance tips

  • A multiplayer mode

    Nucleus links the windows through the game's own LAN or online mode; the handler takes care of it.

Handler notes

  • First make sure you install and run Skyrim Together Reborn correctly in your main game files, install it manually or using Vortex, follow this video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ogIhWUxPyE

  • Split-screen setup.

  • Use a different save slot per instance, once in-game press the right CTRL key to open the connection menu, click connect and in the address field type 127.0.0.1 or localhost then press connect. Do the same in all instances to connect to the offline local server, alt-tab between instances so you can press the right CTRL key in all and use the mouse cursor.

  • Reduce graphics settings in your main game or limit fps to improve performance, you can also alt-tab to the Nucleus window to balance out fps. Gamepads only for now.
